Comments:I am a proud ASA veteran. I enlisted in the Army in May of 1965. Yes... "RA"..did not want to be drafted. I did my basic training at Ft.Leonard Wood, Mo. Co. "C"-2-3. My next stop was the Defense Language Institute West Coast Branch at the Presidio of Monterey, Ca. for 37 weeks of Chinese Mandarin, graduating in May of 1966. I was then sent to the Air Force Security Service school at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Tx. for Voice Intercept Processing Specialist course (ALK20331). Completed in September 1966. I was then assigned to Co. "A" USASA Support Group USA at FT. G.G. Meade,Md. My MOS was O4B2L20 (translator/interpreter) with duty at the National Security Agency from 1966 to 1969. Attended National Cryptological School at NSA: Communist Chinese Area Studies and Signal Intelligence Reporting. One of my main reasons for joining all the groups that I have joined is to find old ASA Army friends and co-workers from the NSA.

Kenneth R. Bird

MOS:

In-Country Dates: 1969

Platoon: 3rd Platoon

Comments: From Harold Haskins 3rd Platoon, 101st RRC, Bien Hoa 1969. Info about Kenneth R. Bird. He saved the life of a non-ASA soldier by swimming out 200 meters and pulling him from the surf near Ham Tan on 25 June 1969. I put him in for a Soldiers Medal (ranks with the Distinguished Flying Cross) for heroism not under fire and was advised by letter after my DEROS that he had received the medal.

Dave Blair

MOS: 05G30

In-Country Dates:

Platoon: 1st Platoon

Comments: While in DaNang I spent most of my time out in the field at various MACV teams and SF Camps about half the time. The mission changed about March of 69 and we started spending more time out as two person teams sitting side-saddle with radio ops at the various units making on the spot corrections. As a result, we only sent out one full team a month and the rest of the guys went every which way. After Mike Lynch left DaNang, I became the Senior Analyst. That meant I ended up spending four or five days a month in Saigon working on getting our reports approved and published. I was to leave Nam in Oct 69 but when I was allocated to Ft. Hood, I extended for 4 1/2 months so I could get out 5 months early. In early Oct 69 it was decided the DaNang Plt would combine with the company attached to the 101st Air Mobile and move to Phu Bai. During the phase out of DaNang it was decided that I would stay behind with two other guys to close up the hotel which was leased until Feb of 70. Tough duty those last two months.

MOS: O5G30

Platoon or ASA Detachment: 337th, 1st Platoon - 1st Inf Div.

Comments: Several operations, all the "walkers" seemed to have stopped when I got there and 1st Div. basically became air mobile.  I extended for a 2nd tour and added 30 days to be home for Christmas, then off to the Group in Baumholder, later Augsburg.   I don't see many field guys at the reunions.  Maybe we became more RA than ASA?  Anyone know what happened to Bill Smith, 05G instructor at Devens, later slot car racer in the Fatherland?

Comments: After 05G school I went to Panama and from there to Augsburg. Served some time in purgatory with Det T, 20lst ASA moving on to Det A in Heidelberg. Somehow I got sent to the 101st and spent the best part of the tour (1 year) back TDY to the 201st and REFORGER. Then back to Det B, 201st in Pirmasens and on to Task Force Charlie in Worms. From there I helped reopen the National Training at Ft. Irwin. There I was a 1SG in addition to whatever silly assignment I originally went to fulfill and somehow got promoted and reclassified as a 98Z E8. From there I went to the 207th MI Group in Ludwigsburg/Stuttgart. Then a terminal assignment as a readiness group adviser in Atlanta. Retired 1 Aug 90, one day before they froze retirements because of Saddam.

Comments:  I served for 6 years in the ready reserve 524th ASA Company, Detroit, Michigan.  We all thought that we would be called to active duty.  We came close but it never happened.  I am so proud of all of my ASA brothers who served in Vietnam.  We never realized just how important our mission was.

Comments: Graduated from 984(COMSEC Analyst) course in Apr 65. Sent to 319th in Germany and was at Bad K. Rothwestern, and Wobeck until 67. Arrived in RVN 5 March 67 assigned to 337th RRC (1st Inf), was assigned to all 3 fwd support plt, HHC 303 RRC, and after the consoldation of SIGSEC to the 3rd Plt 101 RRC at Plantation. When left Nam 3rd Plt was still using a hootch in the HHC 303RRC Area. Went back to Devens and became a 33, never got assigned to SIGSEC Unit after that. Enjoyed much of SIGSEC time however, there were days in Nam that I wished someone else was where I was at and I had the assignment to Saigon. Have seen some stuff written about what us ASAers accomplished. Too bad we cannot write about it. (On second thought, who would believe some of what happened.)

Comments: When my 05G class was getting close to graduation, we all filled out our Dream Sheets to pick the wondrous places we would go to ply our new trade. Then we all went to Vietnam on the same plane. I was in the 328th RRC (Americal Division) in Chu Lai from Sep 68 until Nov 69. Then I moved to the 2d Platoon of the 101st RRC working II Corps out of Nha Trang until May 71. The next month I spent at Tan Son Nhut, but I don't recall much of what I was supposed to be doing there. After that, I went back to the world and got out. COMSEC people were like family then, and still are.
