Platoon: 3rd Platoon

email or homepage address: Robert.Jikaku@us.army.mil

Comments: I was in the 3d Plt the entire time. Went all over III Corps and did a special mission down south in IV Corps with the 44th Special Tactical Zone for 3 months. Around 1970, the 101st started to support divisional units in addition to MACV/SF/non divisional. I spent time with the 11th ACR and 25th ID, before departing Nam. That was just before the forces went into Laos. I retired from the Army, 31 Aug 01. You never forget the guys you went to war with. These are the guys who always volunteered to do what had to be done. My admiration and respect remains with the guys I served with in Nam.

I'm in the process of moving from Florida to North Carolina but as I get the opportunity, I'll scan some and forward them to you. God Bless You All.

Sam Miller and I had a very memorable flight when we brought the snake to Pleiku. The snake's origninal name was Dufus. I am very greatful to the guys that I served with, especially for keeping me out of trouble. I live in Southern California. Does any know whatever happened to that snake?

Comments: I arrived at the 7th RRU in May of 1965 and operated out of Saigon. I was in the original group that started the 2nd platoon. I don't remember if Chui was in that group or joined right after we got there but I sure remember Chui. I have some great pictures of him. I went to Germany in Dec 1966 and stayed until I rejoined the 101st in June of 1967. I was discharged in July of 1968 and returned home to Oklahoma. I got the info about this web site from John McCann. John and I were original members of the 2nd platoon and the original keepers of the snake. It would be great to hear from anyone who was there during my time.

Comments: Memories are a great thing. Last year ('99), I was telling all my friends the significance of 30 years ago, Woodstock, first man on the moon, and I was in Nam. As a radio repairman, I was at Davis Station most of the time but spent the first two months in Can Tho. Why can't I remember the names? SSgt Anderson was there for a while as our leader. I was in Pleiku when Neil Armstrong became the first to set foot on the moon. I later visted Da Nang. I worked for SSgt. German and his boss was Warrant Officer Sheets. Thibodaux was there, along with Urbanowicz and Southerland in the motor pool. I went to Bangkok twice, once with Kenny "Weasel" Ames and once with Leon "JuJu" Fogle. I have many other names in my head but I'm afraid I'd leave someone out. I hope everyone is doing well.

Comments: In 1966 when I first came in country, I was Shanghaied by some PX Depot in Nha Trang. I was uncrating stereos that were watersoaked from being outside in unprotected crates. Finally I got through to Davis Station and on to 1st platoon in the fall of '66.
I was TDY out of the Da Nang Hotel to Hue and Quang Tri among other places in I Corps. I was stationed with Joe Zbozien, Charles Beakley, Doug Faulin (O5G30), Tom Haws, Lester Bullock, Chui Banuelos, Sgts. Reed & Rice, Warren Galinski, Art Fagan, Butch Owens, Frank Puglisi among others in the first platoon. I have a photo taken on Monkey Mt.'s BOOM BOOM Rock but I can only put one name to a face, Frank Puglisi.
We did go water-skiing on the Da Nang River using the Special Services boat, and behind one of the Navy's launches stationed on the river. We also road bicycles through the Citadel in Hue before it got hammered in the Tet Offensive.
In '68 I was sent to the 3rd platoon along with others which was located at Long Binh and eventually relocated to Bein Hoa. Names from the 3rd are Ned "The Greek" Karantonis, Len Manelski, Dave Flores, Thompson, Doug "Scrounger" Freer, Ken "Surfer" Evens and Moor.
Other names that I remember are Joe Morgan (Devens), David Bambarger, Lloyd "Koffee" Kauffman.
I left Nam on Jan 8th 1969 and left the service on the 9th at Oakland, CA with the 150 day early out.
So far I've been in contact with Joe Zbozien, Lester Bullock, Charlie Beakley, Doug Faulin, Koffee Kauffman, Tom Haws and Ned Karantonis.

MOS: 71L

email address: worr2@nc.rr.com

Comments: I can honestly say that I worked with the world's best. Most of my 18 years of 22 were with ASA at one assignment or another. My MOS was 71L. I received my clnc in 1965 at the Regiment at Devens and then I was assigned to the guest speakers program in the DI's office under Maj Jeff M. Davis III. In May 66 we were sent to Ft Huachuca, AZ to start the foreign officer/nco EW course. In Feb 67, LTC Sam J. Bistany was sent to Turkey and I went to Thailand. I lived in tent city from Feb 67 until June/July and then we moved into the million dollar complex as it was called, with the 360 antenna farm that finally came about. I then went to ASAPAC from Feb 68 until Aug 70. Aug 70/71 - 509th RRG in Davis Station and then four months later went up to 8th RRFS in Phu Bai. Aug 71 I went to the Cavaliar Motel in Warrenton VA to be assinged the USASA CDAASG. I then was reassigned to VHFS to help in sending the operators to Ft Sam. When I left VHFS (1974) I then went to the 502d ASA Gp in Augsburg, then reassigned to the 307th ASA Bn(Corps) in Stuttgart. In 1977, I was reassigned to INSCOM ITAC GIPD at Ft Bragg. Spent three years here and then off again overseas to Sinop, Turkey. I left Turkey and came back to Ft Bragg to be the NCOIC of the Corps SSO. As I said I worked with the world's best.
